Back To Basics–Tamari Style–

Let’s Bring it Back.

I’m not talking old school, here.  I’m talking a modernized back to basics at Tamari Restaurant & Lounge.

So, here we are, Tamari 101.

Welcome, everyone.  Let’s take a seat and pull out our menus.  As you begin to look over your menus, you might be confused by some of the words and maybe thinking, what the!?-Am I in the right class?  Why, yes, yes you are.  Let’s begin with our first chapter:  Tapas.

“What are Tapas?”

Simply put, they are small(er) portions plated on a small dish.  Although, tapas are small in size, some of our dishes have multiple items per dish.  Let’s say, for example, our Rock Shrimp Tacos.  They are an eight inch corn tortilla stuffed with marinated shrimp, avocado cream, baby radishes, and topped with a margarita foam.  (The latter, is for another class, Tamari 102).  Basically, a small portion, however they are served 2 to a dish.  Do you know what this means?  “I know! I know!”  “Pick me!”  Yes? ” They are SHARABLE!”  Correct!  Another sharable Tapa, quite popular too, is our Quesadilla, which is a ten inch flour tortilla sliced into 4 pieces.  Perfect for a table of two, four, or even a table of one.  There is no way possible you could fail Tamari 101, for there is absolutely NO wrong way to order off our menu.

“What is best to begin with, as in an appetizer?”  There are many different, yet fun, ways to travel this popular dining road at Tamari.  The most popular Tapa to begin with (as if it were called an appetizer) is our Guacamole!  This dish is definitely sharable with its plantain chips for dipping and a huge bowl of mashed fresh avocados topped with diced red onions, queso fresco cheese (similar to a mild feta), roasted tomatillos, jalapeno peppers, and fresh cilantro.  “What if I don’t like spicy-anything?”  Simply, we’ll be happy to remove it for you!  No worries!

“Well, how many should I order?”  The average order per person varies because it depends on how hungry you are and what you are in the mood for.  Luckily, Tamari’s staff is fabulous with guiding you through our diverse menu to make you feel comfortable with what you’re ordering.  You could even put our service team to the test!  (We love this, by the way!)  Embrace the adventure and you’ll be more relaxed, less confused, and best of all, ready to eat!

With this said, class is dismissed and we’ll pick it back up with our Sushi section of Back to Basics–Tamari 101!

Friday Happy Hour-Tamari Style-

Who’s Ready for  Happy Hour at Tamari Restaurant & Lounge?

The sun is shining, patios are open, and Tamari is ready for our weekly Friday Happy Hour crowd.  The long week has ended and the weekend has begun with two infamous cool-you-off cocktails!

Tamari-tini & Asian Pear Sake-tini.

These specialty cocktails will have you singing, “so call me maybe” with their suggestive vodka overtones which both end with a whisper of sake.  They are served straight up, chilled, and at both locations.

Our Tamari-tini is light, crisp, and “this is crazy,” but it’s Tamari’s version of a traditional cosmopolitan.  Its vibrant plum wine substitutes a ho-hum cranberry drink that has faded from the specialty cocktail scene.  Luckily, at Tamari, our Tamari-tini is filled to the brim with itsy-bitsy pieces of fresh lime that floats atop this amazing, delicious, just-what-I-need, cocktail!

Tamari’s Asian Pear Sake-tini is soft, yet lively with its oh-so-vivacious-grey goose la poire as its main element.  Its sweet whisper of Asian pear sake gives it a delicate side with luscious fruity aromas.

So, “Where you think you’re goin’ baby?”

Tamari, of course!  Our happy hour specials include HALF OFF ALL COCKTAILS, BEER, AND 3/4 of our TAPAS menu from 5-7 p.m.   Plus, mention this blog post and receive a Chef’s Course on Us!

“So here’s our number, so call us, maybe!”

It’s A Chef’s Tasting Night In Pittsburgh!

I walked into a world of wonder yesterday at Tamari Restaurant & Lounge (Warrendale location) and was catapulted into sheer excitement that was swirling around the restaurant.

Chef Roger Li was in full culinary mode with a face of determination, steady hands, and an innovative mind going a mile a minute.

He was preparing for a Chef’s Tasting.  This Chefs Tasting, however, was amazing to watch!  He prepared a huge bamboo board with the finest nigiri, sashimi, maki, and cucumber cut outs filled with tartar.  One could compare his bamboo board to an artists blank canvas that turned out to be a beautiful sushi masterpiece.   For those who have always been curious to what a Chef’s Tasting is and why it’s spectacular–Take a look and be amazed.

Chef Roger–building his sushi masterpiece. Once you thought he was done, no, he came back for more. Adding this and adding that.

I overheard one of my co-workers say “now this is just becoming art!”  And absolutely, it was.

Chef Roger & Nick–Moving the masterpiece to its deserving guests as they anxiously await its tasteful beauty.

And, Ta-da!…

Final draft–Handed in and ready to eat!

These men, are what we call “regulars” and we enjoy having them with their friendly and adventurous spirits!

They look happy–They are happy–Tamari is happy to have them!

Now, one would think this tasting was over, right?  Wrong.  As our guests were splurging into a heaven of sushi, chef Roger was still busy making yet another dish.  If your mouth is watering from this, just wait.  Take another look–

Chef Roger started with this- Simplicity at its best. A Philadelphia roll garnished with mint oil and dollops of roasted red pepper puree.

He then adds baby arugula. Pretty, I know.

Chef Roger pouring the–as I look to call it–the Volcano Roll’s lava.

No words. Well, maybe one–Fabulous.

Again, Ta-da!!…

Chef Roger at his absolute best!

Chef’s Tastings are truly original and just for you!  If you have a special occasion or a just-cause occasion, make a reservation for chef Roger Li’s brilliant Chef Tastings.

Chef Tastings are offered at both locations Monday thru Thursday.
